Ambrose Treacy College (ATC) is an all boys’ college involving students from Years 4 to 10. The first Year 12 students will graduate from the College in 2019. Handbells were introduced to the College in 2002, with a 4 octaves loaned set from the Handbell Society of Australasia (HSA). At the end of 2002, the College bought its own 4 octaves set of Schulmerich Bells. In 2006, a 4 octaves set of Schulmerich handchimes was donated to the College by the HSA as a thank you for the College’s contribution to the successful running of the 12th International Symposium, Brisbane. A 5th octave of Schulmerich handchimes was bought by the College in 2015.
Handbell students learn a variety of specialist handbell and handchime skills, represent their College at College liturgies, concerts, and community functions, and extend their expertise by attending workshops and festivals. Student participation in a handbell ensemble does not incur an annual fee. There are three College handbell ensembles with members from Years 4 to 10.
In 2018, the ringers will participate in the 18th International Handbell Symposium Opening Ceremony to be held in Cairns, and in the Youth Festival prior to the Symposium.
